"Cooking Matters” with the Houston Food Bank

Cooking Matters helps families to shop for and cook healthy meals on a budget, as part of Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign. HOUSTON Academy student assist the Houston Food Bank nutrition educators with the delivery of the program throughout the Houston-area.

Food for Change Program with the Houston Food Bank, Clinton Health Matters Initiative, and Houston Community College

The Food for Change program provides food to individual that are completing an academic education or health education program that can potentially lift them out of poverty or improve their lives. HOUSTON Academy students will assist with the food distribution of this program. This an evaluation project that is funded by the Kresge Foundation and the William T. Grant Foundation to Dr. Hernandez.

Wholesome Wave FVRx Program, Memorial Hermann, & Eastside Urban Harvest

Wholesome Wave is partnering with Memorial Hermann to provide patients with fruit and vegetable prescriptions. Patients are enrolled in 4-5 month program where they receive vouchers that can be redeemed for fresh produce at the Eastside Urban Harvest Farmers’ Market. HOUSTON Academy students will assist with the voucher redemption at the Eastside Urban Harvest Farmers’ Market, along with corresponding data entry.

Health Fairs & United Health Foundation Third Ward Project

HOUSTON Academy students facilitate nutrition education workshops and corresponding food demonstrations to the East End, Third Ward, and surrounding communities in the Houston-area. The focus of the workshops are on children and adults reducing sugar, salt, and increasing fruits, vegetables, and good fats into their diets. USDA materials are handed out at these workshops.
